The Pin Tailed Whydah

The Pin Tailed Whydah is not the prettiest of the Whydahs in my view but it is very noteworthy due to his tail - whichis very long and thin, hence the name pin tailed, the female does not carry such an extravagant tail.

Found in NE Africa, the Pin Tailed Whydah is not uncommon and tends to be seen in pairs.

To quote an early naturalist:-

“The male of this species has a curious habit of hoverin gover his mate when she is feeding on the ground, bobbing up and down. This he generally continues for several minutes without resting”
