The Loyalty of Argus

There was once a young dog called Argus, who loved his master very much. He turned out to be the most loyal of dogs!

His master had to go away and was in fact gone for 20 years, which is longer than the usual lifespan for a dog - during this time Argus became old and broken because no one looked after him.

One day at last the man came home, he was dirty and battered, the servants of the household thought he was a beggar and tried to turn him away.

However the loyal dog Argus recognised the man right away - he was very happy and had been waiting for this moment for 20 years, the dog danced and wagged his tail for joy. His was the only welcome that his master received.

Argus had been waiting loyally for 20 years for this moment and after greeting his master he lay down and died in peace and contentment.

The story of the loyal dog Argus is infact the oldest dog story known to man and was written by Homer around 3,000 years ago! ... the man was the mighty warrier Ulysses.

Although it is the oldest, it is also in a way the greatest and most true of all dog stories because man and dogs have developed an understanding for each other over thousands of years, if you treat a dog well you will know no more loyal friend than he.
