It must be the era I grew up in, I always thought a dog should sit up front in the car with me and not be caged.
However times have changed and most certainly design has improved too - a lot.
Modern dog cages are not only very lightweight, they are also shaped so much better, they fit in the car properly, either in the hatchback/boot area or on the back seat.
This means of course that the dog is safe which is the number one factor, they wont go flying through the air if you slam the breaks on.
