Too obvious, I don't think so! Don't make the mistake of thinking of your dog as human. It is no compliment to him, indeed many dogs are far nobler than many people - any dog owner will confirm that in an instant.
This means you must treat your dog as a dog, he'll be happiest when he knows his place - let him have his own bed to sleep on, not a corner of yours.
Give a dog food that is suited to him, not what you eat, they have different needs to people.
Funnily enough he will be happiest when he knows he is a dog, knows his place as a dog and is respected for being a simple dog!
